It can begin. The EU medicines agency has given Pfizer the green vaccine

“It simply came to our notice then. At 3 pm, the European Medicines Agency announced that it had conditionally approved the Pfizer vaccine. The European Commission could meet tomorrow night, which would speed things up, “commented Prime Minister Andrej Babiš on the approval.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said on Thursday that vaccination against covid-19 will begin in the EU countries, including the Czech Republic, on 27 December and in the next two days. This was also confirmed by Babiš. The first vaccines will go to four hospitals in Prague and two in Brno.

The Czech Republic has ordered a vaccine for 2 million people

The Czechia has so far ordered 4 million vaccines for 2 million people. “There is still an option we want to use and we will see if we can get another 2.4 million vaccines,” Babiš added.

The decision of the European Medicines Agency is also crucial for the Czech Republic. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (YES) has already announced that the Czechia is ready and is just waiting for a decision from Brussels to allow the distribution of the vaccine to member countries.

Efficiency over 90 percent

The vaccine, developed in collaboration with Pfizer and BioNTech, is up to 95 percent effective according to clinical trials. The information relates to protection against covid-19. It is not yet clear to what extent the disease-causing SARS-CoV-2 protects against coronavirus infection. According to the manufacturers, the product has no serious side effects. In the most vulnerable group of older people, the efficiency is 94 percent.

The EMA is also assessing the vaccine of the American company Moderna in an accelerated procedure. The Agency should comment on its conditional registration on 6 January.
