According to the video, shortly after the woman put two squids in hot water and boiled them, the shape of the squid dissolved in water and disappeared. The water turned white as if the starch was removed.

After the video was released, when some Chinese netizens raised suspicion that “Isn’t the video manipulated,” the woman revealed the whole process of boiling squid, saying that it was a squid purchased from the same place the next day.

The woman put two adult palm-sized squids in water and started the stopwatch. After 5 minutes of boiling the squid in water, the squid began to melt, and the shape disappeared completely. The water, which was transparent, turned thick like white rice porridge.

The woman said, “I am worried about whether it is possible to sell these things in the market,” and netizens raised suspicions such as “fake squid” and “it seems to be made of glue”.

China has been stigmatized as a’country of fakes’ by producing and distributing fake food materials dozens of times, including plastic rice, rubber eggs, paper radish, milk contaminated with melamine, and bubble tea made from waste tires.

Regarding the’fake squid’ controversy, experts said, “It is technically difficult and expensive to make squid with glue,” and “it may not be squid made with glue.”

An associate professor at China’s Agricultural University said, “It is a problem caused by repeated freezing and thawing,” and argued that “this may result in the destruction of the cells and the leakage of moisture in the cells.” He added that “a phenomenon also appears in other seafood.”

Regarding the suspicion, the Chengdu Market Supervision and Management Bureau is reported to be investigating samples obtained from stores that sold squid on the 27th of last month.
