Construction should begin in the fall of 2026, and the future Terminal 3 of Sofia Airport should start operating in the spring of 2031, announced Jesus Caballero, CEO of SOF Connect, the company that operates the capital’s airport terminal.
The concept for the new terminal was presented by Cabayero, and among those present was the Acting Minister of Transport Krasimira Stoyanova.
The investment in the terminal will be about BGN 500 million, and with all additional costs the amount will reach BGN 1.2 billion.
The key investment in Terminal 3 of Sofia Airport will set new standards in industry and travel in Eastern Europe, the head of the airport pointed out. According to Caballero, the large-scale transformation and the new terminal will make the airport the first five-star regional airport in Europe.
“The transformation of Sofia Airport will play a decisive role in the economic development of Bulgaria,” he said.
From the exported data, it became known that more than BGN 1.2 billion will be invested during the concession period, and BGN 500 million is planned for the construction of the new Terminal 3. This will help the capital airport to increase its capacity up to 20 million passengers per year.
“Sofia Airport has the potential to become a key regional hub for air travel in Eastern Europe, connecting global destinations and establishing Bulgaria on the international aviation map,” emphasized Jesus Cabayero.
He added that the new terminal will have an area of 65 thousand square meters, will be connected to the already existing Terminal 2, and its conceptual design is inspired by the natural landscapes of Bulgaria.
Terminal 3 will be multi-level – for arrivals and baggage claim, for departures and security screening, and for connection between flights. Thus, the airport will have 34 exits shared between Terminals 2 and 3, which will allow efficient management of the growing number of passengers, Jesus Cabayero said.
