István Nagy: water is both a strategic resource and the key to sustainability

Minister of Agriculture István Nagy gave a lecture on the role of water and the development of water management on Monday in Rome, at the 43rd plenary session of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Ministry of Agriculture (AM) told MTI on Monday.

According to the announcement, the head of the ministry pointed out that water is a resource of strategic importance and a key factor for sustainable development on the entire planet. He emphasized: the security of water resources and food production must be maintained at the same time, which is mainly possible – in addition to improving the water-holding capacity of soils and ecosystems – through the development of irrigation farming.

István Nagy emphasized that Hungary prefers irrigation from surface water, thus reducing the excessive use of underground water resources. To this end, our country has created the legal foundations for the establishment of irrigation communities, of which more than 200 have been officially recognized so far, in an area of about 80,000 hectares – detailed the minister.

On the occasion of the session of the UN World Food and Agriculture Organization between July 1 and 7, the member states with a large majority – including the support of Hungary – re-elected the Director General of the FAO, the Chinese Tsü Tung-yü.
