Istat, the underground and illegal economy generates 11.9% of GDP

The underground and illegal economy accounts for 11.9% of national GDP, equivalent to 211 billion euros: this is what emerged from the latest Istat report

L’State has published an interesting report concerning what is the shadow economy and / or illegal. These are all economic activities which, for various reasons, escape direct observation.

The main components are the irregular work o l ‘incorrect communication of turnover and costs. There are also elements such as rent in black and tips. The illegal economy also includes the production of goods and services whose sale, distribution or possession are prohibited by law or unauthorized.

Istat, the underground and illegal economy is worth 211 billion: stable incidence

This economic flow in the 2018 generated a sum of just over 211 billion euros, in decline of1,3% (213,9) compared to 2017, which is equivalent to11,9% of the Pil national. A data of some weight, but still down compared to 2014 when there was a peak of 13,0%.

This trend is related to the decrease, equal to 2.9 billion compared to 2017, of the hidden value added by under-declaration and by the use of irregular work input (-1.7 billion). The rest of the components are growing by a total of + 1,4 billions. The illegal economy has kept its incidence stable with the1,1%.

Compared to 2017 there is also a slight variation in the weight concerning the various components of the underground economy. The shares attributable to the sub-declaration have passed since 46,0% al 45,3%, the use of input of irregular work since 37,5% al 37,2%.
