The Uzbek terrorist who shot 39 visitors in a nightclub in Istanbul on the night of December 31, 2016 to January 1, 2017, will spend the rest of his life in prison. A Turkish judge sentenced him to life forty times plus another 1,368 years in prison on Monday, the Turkish state news agency reports Anatolia.
Abdulkadir Masharipov first shot a police officer at the nightclub around 1.15 a.m. that night and then entered the entertainment venue. There he caused a massacre by shooting randomly around him. In total he fired about 180 bullets.
After the shooting, Masharipov managed to escape. Upon his arrest on January 17, 2017, he said he had acted on behalf of the Islamic State (IS) and that his act was an act of revenge for Turkish military involvement in Syria.
The Reina nightclub shooting was one of many attacks committed by jihadists in Turkey that year. In most cases, IS claimed the wrongdoing.
Club Reina was largely demolished by the municipality four months after the attack. According to employees, this happened unexpectedly and without reason.
