ISS Astronauts Watch Russia Burn in Earth’s Atmosphere

ANTARIKSA — Astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) witnessed the burning of the Russian spacecraft in the Earth’s atmosphere on Wednesday, November 29 2023. The Progress MS-23 cargo plane departed from the ISS with a load of rubbish, namely old equipment and station household waste. the.

“Everything the experts decided to throw away from the station,” said Russian Space Agency Roscosmos Cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko.

Just four hours after the Progress MS-23 lifted off, NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli on the ISS discovered the location where the spacecraft entered Earth’s atmosphere. He photographed it as it burned up in the Earth’s atmosphere resulting in some incredible photos.

“It happened faster than I thought and was only visible for about 2-3 minutes. It reminded me a bit of fireworks, especially when they burst,” wrote Moghbeli on X (Twitter) on Wednesday, November 30, 2023.

According to Roscosmos, most of the spacecraft and its contents burned up high above Earth. However, some of the material managed to fall into the Pacific Ocean.

Re-entering the earth with such fire is standard practice for non-reusable cargo ships. Two of the three spacecraft currently sending goods to the ISS, Russia’s Progress capsule and Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus, routinely jettison into the atmosphere after completing their missions. Source: Space.com
