Some humanitarian associations continue their project in Africa without difficulty. This is the case of the Initiatives Solidarité Sénégal (ISS) association which, as part of a partnership with the village of Kassack-Nord in Senegal in place since 2001, has carried out several projects with young people from the area in recent years. . Actions paused throughout the pandemic, and relaunched in 2022.
Once again, six young people from the association, from Jœuf, Valleroy, Rombas and Thionville, left for Senegal last week to continue the construction and development of the village high school, an educational project started in 2017. More specifically, it concerns the creation of two new classrooms of 54 m² each, intended for the establishment’s 372 pupils.
Construction site and tourist visits
Stéphane Miliado, president of the association, recounts their adventure: “After a stopover in Istanbul, the group arrived in Dakar on Friday April 14, before reaching the village of Kassack Nord by taxi on the tracks of Senegal. A great welcome was given to us by all the inhabitants of the village”.
The operation went off without a hitch. “We started the project by preparing the agglomerates”. The heat is already heavy and the young volunteers face a “real upheaval and culture shock. In Europe, there are 9 liters of drinking water in a flush. In Senegal, we have 5 liters of water for our toilet and the preparation of the daily meal. Sobriety is essential among the inhabitants here,” remarks Stéphane. In parallel with the worksite which takes place in the morning, the young people were also able to visit the city of Saint-Louis, the Pink Lake but also the island of Gorée, “a place symbol of the memory of the slave trade officially recognized by the UN”. The trip ended on Saturday April 22.
