ISRO’s Aditya-L1 Mission Captures First Full Disk Image of the Sun – Dec 2023 Update

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) announced on Friday, December 8, that the Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT) installed on the Aditya-L1 spacecraft has captured the first full disk image of the Sun at near-ultraviolet wavelengths.

The achievement of Aditya-L1 marks an important milestone in ISRO’s solar power observation and research program.

“The Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT) instrument on the Aditya-L1 spacecraft has succeeded in capturing the first full disk image of the Sun in the wavelength range 200-400 nm. “SUIT captures images of the Sun’s photosphere and chromosphere in this wavelength range using various scientific filters,” the Indian space agency said.

The space agency further said that the SUIT payload was activated on November 20, 2023, and after a successful pre-commissioning phase, the on-board telescope captured these images.

“On November 20, 2023, the SUIT payload was turned on. After a successful pre-commissioning phase, the telescope captured its first scientific light images on December 6, 2023. These unprecedented images, obtained using eleven different filters (as shown in Table 1), include the first representation of the disk Complete sun. at wavelengths ranging from 200 to 400 nm, excluding Ca II h. “The complete image of the solar disk at the Ca II h wavelength has been studied at other observatories,” added ISRO.

Important features revealed from the captured images are sunspots, layers and quiescent regions of the Sun as marked in the Mg II h image, which provide scientists with pioneering insights into the intricate details of the Sun’s photosphere and chromosphere, ISRO said. “SUIT observations will help scientists study the dynamic relationships of the sun’s magnetized atmosphere and limit the impact of solar radiation on Earth’s climate,” the space agency added.

ISRO also said that the development of SUIT involved collaborative efforts under the leadership of the Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune. This collaboration includes ISRO, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Center of Excellence in Indian Space Sciences (CESSI) at IISER-Kolkata, Indian Institute of Astrophysics Bengaluru, Udaipur Solar Observatory (USO-PRL) and Tezpur. Assam University.

Meanwhile, Aditya-L1 will be placed in a halo orbit, maintaining a stable position relative to the Sun after reaching point L1.
