According to foreign media such as the New York Times and BBC, the Israeli military announced that Sergeant Meir Eisenkot (25), the son of retired Lieutenant General Gadi Eisenkot (63), died in Jabaliya, northern Gaza Strip.

Local media reported that Sergeant Eisenkot, a guerrilla reservist, was seriously injured in an explosion in a tunnel shaft and was taken to the hospital where he died.

His father, Reserve Lieutenant General Eisenkot, served as the Chief of Staff of the Israeli Army from 2015 to 2019. After serving in the military for about 40 years, he entered politics last year and is currently participating in the war cabinet led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a member of the National Unity Party.

Prime Minister Netanyahu issued a statement expressing condolences to Eisenkot’s family.

He called Sergeant Eisenkot “a brave warrior and a true hero. Our heroes did not fall in vain. We will continue to fight until we are victorious.”

Israeli opposition leader and former Prime Minister Yair Lapid posted a photo of the Eisenkot father and son in military uniform hugging each other on his “The fate of a nation is decided in a single hug,” he wrote.

The Israeli military announced on this day that at least two people, including Sergeant Eisenkot, were killed during fighting in the Gaza Strip.
