The text calls for “an immediate, lasting and sustained humanitarian ceasefire leading to an end to hostilities”.

Norway is among the countries that voted in favor.

Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide says he is happy that they have adopted the resolution.

– The international community agrees on many of the central issues, including the importance of protecting civilians and remedying the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, he says.

Jordan was behind the draft. It had to have the support of two thirds of the UN members present in the room. 14 countries, including the USA and Israel, voted against. 45 countries abstained from voting.

The resolution has not been well received in Israel, writes the newspaper Haaretz.

On Friday evening, Israel announced that it is expanding its attacks on Gaza, and on the night of Saturday there are reports of violent explosions in the Gaza Strip.

There are also reports of ongoing fighting between Israeli forces and Hamas.

Israel makes it clear that it will not respect the UN countries’ plea for a ceasefire.

– On the contrary, we reject the UN Assembly’s despicable plea for a ceasefire, writes Israel’s Foreign Minister Eli Cohen on X, formerly Twitter.

He draws parallels to the world’s fight against Nazism and the terrorist group IS, and writes that Israel will continue its fight against Hamas.

Israel’s UN ambassador Gilad Erdan is also critical.

– Today we have witnessed a UN that is no longer either legitimate or relevant, he told the UN Assembly after the vote, according to the Guardian, and added that he believes the international community has now shown that they will defend what he refers to as ” Nazi terrorists’ rather than supporting Israel’s right to defend itself.
