Israel plans to take control of the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt.
Israel has announced a new goal in the war against Hamas militants: The Israeli side intends to launch a military operation to establish control over the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt and has already informed Cairo about its plans.
Writes about this The Times of Israel.
In particular, we are talking about intentions to take control of the Rafah border checkpoint.
To date, the Israeli authorities have not yet launched this operation; the timing of its start will depend on negotiations with the Egyptian side. During these contacts, Israel is trying to convince Egypt that the IDF operation will not lead to accidental damage on Egyptian territory and will not violate clauses in the 1979 peace treaty between the countries that limit the deployment of troops in the region.
Egyptian authorities, meanwhile, continue to work on a new deal between Israel and Hamas on the release of hostages captured by militants.
In addition, Cairo rejected a proposal to jointly patrol the Egyptian side of the border with Israeli troops.
Earlier, the head of the Israeli Ministry of Defense, Yoav Galant, said that the IDF’s actions aimed at fighting Hamas would soon change. According to him, the war is moving to a new stage, involving various types of special operations.
Let us recall that in early January, Israel attacked military installations of Hezbollah militants in Lebanon. It was reported that one of the leaders of the group, Hussein Yazbek, was eliminated.
