Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Israel plans to pump thousands of gallons of seawater into a labyrinthine network of tunnels under Gaza. This was done as an effort to expel Hamas fighters from the tunnel.

Potential tunnel flooding reported by Wall Street Journal (WSJ). Even so, observers consider this step to be very significant and will pose major risks, including losses to Israel.

The Gaza Tunnel is believed to be hundreds of miles wide and lies 30 m (100 ft) below the surface and is difficult to map. That poses a challenge to an Israeli attack or potential occupation.

The whereabouts of the Israeli hostages are also unclear. Many observers said they could have been in the tunnel.

“They don’t know whether there are hostages being held there or not,” military analyst Professor Michael Clarke quoted the Israeli military as saying Sky News, Thursday (7/12/2023), explained the risks if the tunnel was completely flooded with sea water.

Another risk, Clarke said, is that the Israeli military could pollute the aquifers that help Gaza’s water supply. “That would be a piece of environmental vandalism for which the world will not thank Israel,” he added.

He also denied that Israel would actually do that. According to him, this is just “psychological warfare” by Israeli Prime Minister (PM) Benjamin Netanyahu.

“Letting a story get out may be part of the psychological warfare to get Gazans in the tunnels to get out,” Clark said. “To get them out of the tunnel with words, not water.”
