Israel’s Goal for Gaza: Demilitarization and Elimination of Hamas

Mark Regev, senior advisor to the Israeli Prime Minister, said that Israel does not want to reoccupy Gaza again, noting that the Strip will be “demilitarized and without Hamas.”

Mark Regev said, in an interview with Sky News Arabia, on Friday:

We do not want to occupy Gaza. We left it, as you know, in 2005, and we have no intention of returning to it. We are waging this war because Hamas started it, not Israel. We were forced into this war because Hamas attacked us. We will fight Hamas until victory. Regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip in the future, I say that it will change completely. Gaza will be demilitarized and without Hamas, which we will destroy and eliminate all ideologues.

Earlier on Friday, Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the army would control the Gaza Strip after the war, noting that Israel “does not trust international forces.”

He added, in a meeting with the mayors of the Gaza Strip, that the Israeli army “will not hand over the Gaza Strip to external forces.”

He continued: “There is a great determination here on your part and on the part of the government to restore more than what was there.”

The continuous Israeli raids on the Gaza Strip for more than a month have killed more than 11,000 people, more than a third of whom are children.

The violent Israeli strikes came in the wake of a surprise attack by Hamas on October 7, which led to the death of 1,400 people in Israel and the capture of about 240 people.
