Israel has destroyed nearly half of the agricultural land in the Gaza Strip, leaving it with destruction that could take years to recover, according to an expert in analyzing satellite images.
“What we see in satellite images and data is absolutely devastating,” He Yin, a geography professor at Kent State University in Ohio, told CNN on Monday.
He said he and his colleagues had “seen holes, mortar impacts, and burn marks in images from space,” explaining that “nearly half of Gaza’s agricultural land has been destroyed.”
The geography professor emphasized that “the residents of Gaza depended on foreign aid before the war because there was not enough land for agriculture, and with almost half of the agricultural land ‘ extinction, the situation can only be more dangerous. “

He used two photographs of an agricultural area in Gaza, the first dated May 10, 2023 and the second February 7, 2024, to show the extent of the destruction that had occurred.
The American academic also warned about the effects of this on farmers for several years.
“It is not as if the war is ending now, that farmers can plant trees and harvest next year,” he said.
Instead, he explained: “You can imagine that even if the war stops now, there is no way for the agricultural sector to recover quickly.
