Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Israel non-stop pounding Gaza Strip since October 7. The death toll continues to fall and civil infrastructure remains in ruins.
Israel’s ferocity has made a number of netizens think the United Nations (UN) should send international troops to Gaza.
So what are the conditions?
The UN could send international troops to Gaza through Resolution 377A.
“[Resolusi ini] can recommend sending troops. “It’s just a matter of which countries will commit to joining,” said international relations observer from the University of Indonesia, Yon Machmudi CNNIndonesia.comWednesday (13/12).
Resolution 377A or “Unity for Peace” aims to resolve the situation where the UN Security Council has failed to carry out its functions.
This resolution authorizes the General Assembly to convene meetings through the Secretary General and make collective recommendations including the use of armed force if necessary.
To be adopted, the resolution must be approved by at least one member of the UN Security Council or a group of members of the General Assembly.
Yon explained that the new resolution regarding the deployment of international peacekeeping forces, through a special session of the General Assembly, could be used as long as major countries supported it. However, the decision will raise questions about who will be willing to start by sending troops to Gaza.
Arab countries also refused to send international troops to Gaza.
“What made it possible was China and Russia,” said Yon.
Meanwhile, Indonesian international law expert Hikmahanto Juwana said the possibility of deploying UN troops would be difficult to implement.
“UN forces depend on troops from member countries. If no one contributes, it will certainly be difficult,” said Hikmahanto.
He then said, “Usually the US contributes troops, but this time the US is behind Israel.”
Regarding international troops, the US and Israel briefly discussed several options for resolving the Gaza conflict.
