In the face of the war in Gaza, the Palestinians repeated in early April a request they made in 2011, through which they try to make Palestine a full member state in the United Nations, where currently has “independent” status. member state with observer status.”

To be granted full membership requires, before a two-thirds majority vote in the General Assembly, a positive recommendation from the Security Council. But the United States used its veto power against a draft resolution in this regard on April 18.

Although the General Assembly cannot oppose this vote, the Palestinians decided to go to the 193 member states to confirm that they would have secured the two-thirds majority necessary for membership. without the American hump.

The draft resolution, submitted by the UAE and adopted by a majority of 143 votes in favor, 9 against and 25 abstentions, states that “Palestine deserves membership in the United Nations according to Article 4 of the Charter, and therefore i. should be accepted as a member of the United Nations.”

He also recommends that the Security Council “reconsider the matter positively.”
