When rockets are fired from Gaza, Israel’s air defense systems detect their direction of flight, triggering warning sirens in threatened areas. The capital, full of people and cars, literally becomes empty in a few seconds – as if swept away.
Cars, buses and other means of transport with flashing emergency lights are standing abandoned on the streets, residents have taken refuge in the nearest bomb shelters and nearby buildings. After a short while, the Iron Dome or one of the other air defense systems activates, and loud booms are heard overhead – missiles launched by terrorists are shot down in the sky.
Israel claims that Iron Dome is about 90% effective. During the November 10 rocket attack on Tel Aviv, a piece of rocket fell on a car right in front of the Latvian Embassy and punched a hole in the roof of the car. “I don’t understand how they still have rockets to fire at us,” states one local. On October 7, the attack on Hamas began with a volley of 3,000 rockets on Israel in the first 20 minutes. Such a volume of missiles overwhelmed the capabilities of anti-aircraft defense systems. Since the beginning of the war, the number of rockets fired at Israel is about 10 thousand, most of them were fired from the Gaza Strip.
