Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Wildlife expert Israel running a program using birds of prey to find corpses around the attack site Hamas.
Ohad Hatzofe of the Israel Nature and Parks Authority said it uses eagles, vultures and other birds of prey equipped with tracking devices, quoted from Barron’s.
“When the war started, I was approached by several reservists serving in that unit,” said Hatzofe, as quoted from AFP.
“They asked if my bird could help,” he added.
The idea of using tracking birds first came from EITAN, a unit of the army’s human resources branch. One of the tasks of this unit is to search for missing soldiers.
Hatzofe has experience leading programs tracking endangered griffons, eagles and other birds of prey that feed on animal carcasses.
Reporting from Dawn, this program is carried out by tagging hundreds of birds who are given GPS trackers to find out their migration patterns, eating habits and environmental threats they face.
On Monday (23/10), an albatross found near Beeri, just outside the Gaza strip, went to verify and found four bodies. Hatzofe could not provide further information regarding the location of the body or its identity.
Hatzofe also said he got data from a second bird, namely Bonelli’s eagle. Bonelli allegedly found other bodies in areas around Israel.
Beeri is a kibbutz farming community that experienced attacks by Hamas troops in the border area. 85 Beeri residents were killed in the worst attack since Israel’s founding in 1948.
Currently, more than 30 Beeri residents are reported missing and are thought to be on the list of 240 hostages captured by Hamas.
