Israeli underground wall along Gaza Strip completed after nearly four years

After nearly four years, Israel has completed the construction of an underground wall along the Gaza Strip. Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz announced this today. The structure is intended to prevent attacks in Israel by Hamas, the group that rules in Gaza.

During the 2014 Gaza war, fighters from Gaza managed to enter Israeli territory through attack tunnels several times. During the construction of the underground wall, the Israeli army demolished many of these tunnels.

The underground barrier is 65 kilometers long and made of 140,000 tons of iron and steel. On top of the structure is a six meter high fence. The whole is equipped with sensors, radar systems, cameras and a remote-controlled weapon system.

Israel does not disclose how deep the wall is. Gantz predicted that the “barrier will give Israeli citizens a sense of security”.
