Tensions Escalate as Israeli-Lebanese Ceasefire Faces Challenges Amidst Deadly Clashes
At least 22 people were killed and 80 wounded on Sunday when Israeli troops opened fire on displaced civilians attempting too return to thier villages in southern Lebanon, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. Israel claims it targeted individuals who “posed a threat” as thay approached its troops.
The incident occurred on the day Israeli forces were supposed to withdraw from southern Lebanon under the terms of a ceasefire agreement. However, Israel announced a delay in its military withdrawal, citing the failure of the Lebanese army to take up positions across the region and ensure that Hizbullah fighters had moved north of the Litani River.
Lebanese Prime Minister najib Mikati warned that any Israeli deviations from the ceasefire agreement would have “grave repercussions.” he called on American and French mediators to “restrain Israel’s aggression and force it to withdraw from the territories it occupies.”
in response to the escalating tensions, the White House announced that israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend the truce until February 18th, providing additional time for Israeli troops to withdraw.
Regional Rejection of Trump’s Proposal
Meanwhile, Egypt and Jordan rejected a proposal by former US president Donald Trump to transfer Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to their territories. Trump had suggested that both countries should take in residents from Gaza, describing the coastal enclave as a “demolition site.”
Far-right politicians in Israel, including Itamar Ben-Gvir, head of the Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Strength) party, welcomed the idea. “One of our demands from Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is to encourage voluntary emigration, and when the president of the largest superpower in the world, Trump, raises that idea on his own, the Israeli government ought to implement it – encourage emigration now!” Ben-Gvir said.
Gaza Ceasefire Complications
The situation in Gaza remains volatile. A Gaza resident was shot and killed by Israeli troops near a roadblock on the main Salah al-Din road after Israel refused to allow passage to thousands of war refugees attempting to return to northern Gaza.
Under the ceasefire agreement, Israel was due to withdraw from parts of the netzarim corridor, which bisects Gaza from east to west, on saturday. However,Israel delayed the move, citing alleged violations by Hamas. In response, Hamas failed to provide a list detailing the condition of remaining hostages set to be released in the first stage of the deal.
On Saturday,Hamas released four female Israel Defense Forces soldiers in exchange for 200 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. However, the group failed to release a female civilian, Arbel Yehud, as stipulated in the agreement.Israel has stated that passage through the Netzarim corridor will not be permitted until Yehud is freed.
Hostages and Prisoners
Ninety hostages, both dead and alive, remain in Gaza. The four released soldiers, who served as spotters on the Gaza border, are recovering in a hospital in central Israel after 477 days in captivity. dr. Michal Steinman, part of the medical team, praised their resilience: “You simply see, each and every one of them, four strong women who found a way to survive. We have begun to examine them medically and their psychological condition. But in general, you see their vitality, you see their survival power.”
The 200 Palestinians released on Saturday were hailed as heroes upon their return to the West Bank and Gaza. Seventy of them, responsible for the murder of manny Israelis, were sent to Egypt, with some remaining there and others moving to Turkey and Algeria. After three years in exile, they will be permitted to return to Gaza or the west Bank.
