A 16-year-old Israeli teenager named Meidan Keller died while being treated in hospital due to a collapsed lung. The disease is said to be caused by the use of electric cigarettes.
Shortly after the announcement of Meidan’s death from his father’s post, the hospital explained that Meidan died after the patient was disconnected from the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine (ECMO). The machine is useful for providing cardiac and respiratory assistance.
“Initial details indicate that the boy died after severing ties with ECMO for unknown reasons,” said the Israel Schneider Children’s Medical Center quoted in The Times of Israel, Monday (8/5/2023).
The hospital said that the case had been transferred to the Ministry of Health for investigation. In an interview, Meidan’s father said his son died when he briefly stepped out of the room. He said the machine could be easily removed.
“I went to get some food, I told the nurse to look after him because I was going out of the room. After two minutes, I heard screams from the hall and they performed CPR on him,” said Meidan’s father, Yariv Keller.
“I saw the hospital put out a statement saying he had disconnected himself from the machine. If anyone sees Meidan removing the tube they should let us know. It’s a tube connected to an artery in the neck, moving it in the wrong place could loosen it. ” he continued.
As for more, Yarif asked parents to ensure that their children do not use e-cigarettes. According to him, access to electronic cigarettes among teenagers is very easy.
“Unfortunately, e-cigarettes are accessible to children. As parents, my wife and I are involved in Meidan’s life, but there is no total control. You can educate, but it is difficult to prevent smoking,” he said.
Regarding the impact that e-cigarettes can have, the Israeli Association of Public Health Physicians called for greater precautionary measures to block the sale of tobacco products to children and called for a ban on e-cigarettes.
“Using e-cigarettes puts lives at risk,” said Israeli Public Health official Hagai Levine.
As for further, previously Israel’s Minister of Finance had received strong criticism from health officials. This happened because the Israeli Minister of Finance signed a reduction in e-cigarette taxes by up to 20 percent.
