An Israeli student suffered minor stab wounds while walking down a street in New York City’s Crown Heights neighborhood in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Police have opened an investigation into an alleged hate crime.
The student is a member of the Hasidic community of the Chabad movement, Israeli media said, which did not give his age.
The assault occurred at 2 a.m. Saturday as the young man was walking down Union Street toward Troy Avenue, Crownheights.info noted, citing a police report.
Two individuals then approached the student who, according to descriptions, was wearing “traditional Jewish garb”. They asked him if he was Jewish and stabbed him in the arm when he said yes.
They would have used a screwdriver.
The youth returned home and called the Hatzalah emergency services who took him to the hospital. He was able to leave the latter after being taken care of and receiving treatment.
In a Twitter post, a Chabad public relations officer said he spoke with the student.
“Although he remains visibly traumatized, the victim expressed gratitude that he was not injured more seriously,” Behrman said. “This incident remains deeply disturbing and we have confidence in the ability of the New York police to conduct a thorough investigation to apprehend the perpetrators of this assault.”
Investigations have been launched for hate crime, recalled Behram.
“We are aware of the incident and we are in contact with the police and with our partners in the community,” noted for its part the branch of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in New York.
Police have recorded 100 anti-Semitic hate crimes in New York since the start of the year – a figure that reveals Jews have been targeted more each month – by far – than any other community group.
