Israeli Shelling Injures Nepalese Officer in UNIFIL’s Center 8-33 in Southern Lebanon

Beirut, October 28, 2023 (Xinhua) A Nepalese officer in the United Nations forces operating in southern Lebanon (UNIFIL) was moderately injured this evening (Saturday) as a result of two Israeli shells falling on a center affiliated with it, according to the official Lebanese media.

The Lebanese National News Agency said, “A Nepali captain from the UNIFIL forces was moderately injured in his stomach and arm as a result of two Israeli shells falling on Center 8-33 in the town of Hula, near the Israeli Al-Abad site.”

Nepal participates in UNIFIL with a battalion of peacekeepers consisting of 874 soldiers.

Earlier today, UNIFIL announced in a statement that an unexploded shell had fallen at its command headquarters in the border town of Naqoura in the western sector of southern Lebanon, noting that there were no casualties, and that it was working to confirm the source of the shell.

UNIFIL called on “all participants in the ongoing conflict to stop any actions that would endanger the safety and security of civilians or United Nations personnel, especially since such actions may constitute violations of international law.”

UNIFIL previously announced on October 15 that its headquarters had been hit by a missile, but no casualties were reported, and it urged the parties on both sides of the Lebanese-Israeli border to cease fire.

UNIFIL has been deployed in southern Lebanon since 1978, and works in close coordination with the Lebanese Army to help the government extend its authority over its entire territory.

Since 2006, UNIFIL has been monitoring the border between Lebanon and Israel and working to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which put an end to the war between Israel and Hezbollah in the summer of 2006.

Today, both sides of the Lebanese-Israeli border witnessed an intense exchange of artillery and missile shelling, during which Hezbollah targeted several Israeli military sites, and the latter responded by bombing several Lebanese border areas.

Since the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) launched Operation “Al-Aqsa Flood” on October 7, the border between Lebanon and Israel has witnessed daily bombing and intermittent exchange of fire between Hezbollah, Palestinian movements, and the Israeli army. /end of news/
