Israeli scientists from the Weizmann Institute of Science have grown a complete model of a human embryo, indistinguishable from a real one – without sperm and an egg. It is reported by the BBC.
It is noted that to create a “laboratory copy” of a real embryo, neither the fusion of the spermatozoon with the egg, nor the attachment to the wall of the uterus was required. However, the “model” of the embryo, grown from stem cells, looks like a healthy human fetus two weeks after conception, its creators assure.
“In the process of growth, he (embryo. – EADaily) even produced the hormones that scientists use to determine the fact of pregnancy when taking a pregnancy test. A pregnancy test carried out in the laboratory showed a positive result, ”the message says.
Scientists hope that embryonic models will help them understand how different types of cells come into being, allow them to observe the earliest stages of building organs in the body, and explain the origin of hereditary and genetic diseases.
