The Israeli army announced on Friday the killing of the commander of Hezbollah’s missile unit, Ali Abdel Hassan Naim, during a raid carried out by the Israeli Air Force on the Bazouriyeh area in southern Lebanon.

The army said in a statement that the man was a “missile commander” and one of the commanders of launching missiles with heavy warheads, “and responsible for planning and launching attacks against Israel.”

A video posted online by Israel showed a car on the street, in which Naim was said to be traveling, exploding after it was hit by a missile.

The National News Agency, affiliated with the Lebanese government, also reported on Friday that a person had been killed “in an enemy drone strike that targeted a car on the road to the town of Al-Bazouriya in the Tire district, and ambulances rushed to transport the wounded.”

Hezbollah did not immediately comment on the attack, but announced “the rise of seven martyrs, including Ali Abdel Hassan Naeem, on the road to Jerusalem,” without further details. However, it announced that it had targeted the 91st Division’s headquarters in the Pranit barracks with Burkan missiles, indicating that it had achieved direct hits.

Syria accuses Israel of launching raids on Aleppo

Syria accused Israel of launching raids on the city of Aleppo, which resulted in the killing of more than 40 people and the injury of many others.

The Syrian Ministry of Defense said that Israeli aircraft targeted several locations in the Aleppo countryside at 01:45 am on Friday (22:45 GMT Thursday).

The Syrian Ministry of Defense also said that a number of civilians and soldiers were killed in the Aleppo countryside.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, based in Britain, an Israeli attack targeted an area near Hezbollah missile depots, resulting in at least “42 deaths.”

The Observatory explained in a statement that the dead “among them 36 members of the Syrian regime forces and 6 members of the Lebanese Hezbollah,” as a result of “the Israeli strikes that targeted a Hezbollah missile depot, in the Jibreen area near Aleppo International Airport, after midnight on Thursday/Friday.”

The Syrian Observatory confirmed to Agence France-Presse that “this death toll from regime forces is the highest” in an Israeli raid in Syria, since Israel intensified its targeting of sites in its northern neighbor, after the outbreak of war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip on October 7. the first.

The Syrian Observatory indicated that the Israeli air strike also targeted, in the city of Al-Safira, located southeast of the city of Aleppo, “defense factories that were affiliated with the Syrian Ministry of Defense before Iranian groups took control of them.”

For its part, the official Syrian news agency, SANA, quoted a military source as saying that an Israeli air strike targeted “a number of points in the Aleppo countryside,” causing deaths and injuries among “civilians and military personnel,” the number of whom was not specified.

Fears of the conflict expanding regionally

These strikes coincide with the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip, which fears are increasing that it will expand.

Since the start of the Gaza War, Israel has intensified its raids on Syrian territory, bombing Damascus and Aleppo international airports several times, as well as sites belonging to Hezbollah.

According to the Syrian Observatory, since the beginning of 2024, “Israel has targeted Syrian territory 28 times,” resulting in “hitting and destroying about 56 targets, including weapons and ammunition depots, headquarters, centers, and vehicles.”

During the past years, Israel launched hundreds of air strikes in Syria, mainly targeting Iranian and Hezbollah targets, including warehouses and shipments of weapons and ammunition, but also Syrian army sites.

Israel rarely confirms the implementation of these strikes, but it reiterates that it will confront what it considers attempts by Tehran to establish its military presence in Syria.
