Israeli Prisoners’ Families Protest Against Netanyahu in Jerusalem

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Families of Israeli prisoners held in Gaza protested with action long march from Tel Aviv to the Prime Minister’s residence Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Saturday (18/11/2023).

Netanyahu is on the brink after a Nov. 14 poll showed Netanyahu’s popularity among Israeli Jews at only about 4 percent. Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s opponents and traditional allies are calling for him to resign after the war in Gaza ends.

Palestinian-Israeli Affairs expert at the Middle East Institute in Washington DC, Khaled Elgindy, said this was a very vulnerable situation for Netanyahu in the history of his political career.

“He is extremely vulnerable, more so than he has ever been in his political career considering he presided over the largest security intelligence failure in Israel’s history,” Elgindy reportedly said Aljazirah, Saturday (18/11/2023).

Netanyahu won elections in November last year and installed the most right-wing government in Israel’s history. Netanyahu has struggled with criticism. Massive protests have disrupted Netanyahu’s tenure over his efforts to reform the judiciary.

But Hamas’ surprise attack on October 7 has eroded much of the support Netanyahu once enjoyed.

“I suspect there is a lot of dissatisfaction with his leadership in government, even within his own party,” said Zachary Lockman, an expert on Palestine and Israel at New York University.

In Israel, 94 percent of the population believes that the Netanyahu government is at least partly to blame for the events of October 7 when Hamas fighters broke through the border fence and attacked southern Israel. Israel claims the attack killed 1,200 people.

The majority of Israelis believe that Netanyahu should resign after the war ends. Much of the criticism leveled at Netanyahu has been for the government’s lack of resolve in freeing more than 200 prisoners in Gaza held by Hamas and other Palestinian fighters.

On Friday (17/11/2023), Israel found the bodies of at least two captives. Meanwhile four captives have been freed through mediation efforts led by Qatar and other countries.

But Netanyahu has so far rejected a larger ceasefire deal in exchange for the release of more prisoners.

Netanyahu said he would only consider halting attacks on Gaza when all the hostages are freed.

Reports indicate that Palestinian fighters offered to free at least 50 hostages in exchange for a three-day ceasefire, but Netanyahu allegedly rejected the deal. So far, the President of the United States (US), Joe Biden, supports Netanyahu in opposing the ceasefire.

“They have the full support of the United States, but the Biden administration’s patience may run out someday. “Demands for a ceasefire are increasing in the United States, but (also) in Europe and other countries,” Lockman said.
