Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu Urges International Support in War Against Hamas

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Tuesday for broad international support in the war his country is waging against Hamas.

Netanyahu said during his meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who arrived on a supportive visit: “The world must stand united behind Israel in order to defeat Hamas.”

Netanyahu added: “The brutality we witnessed committed by Hamas killers leaving Gaza was the worst crimes committed against Jews since the Holocaust.” In reference to the killing of more than six million Jews at the hands of the Nazis.

The German leader is one of several senior politicians who arrived in Israel to show solidarity with it after the sudden attack launched by Hamas on border towns in Israel.

In this context, a senior Israeli official said on Tuesday that his country had attacked about 5,000 Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip since October 7, and had canceled a “large number” of other strikes in an effort to avoid causing human casualties among Palestinian civilians.

The official spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity.

The official did not clarify the number of air strikes that were canceled during the days-long bombing of Gaza, which led to the death of about 3,000 Palestinians, according to local health authorities, saying only that each such operation was “approved at the highest level” in the Israeli army.

He added that following the devastating incursions carried out by Hamas on October 7, Israel is determined to eliminate this group in Gaza, “even if it takes months or years.”
