Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu Hospitalized Ahead of Crucial Judiciary Bill Vote

Jerusalem ∙ Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (73), who is in hospital following a pacemaker surgery, may reach Parliament today. He is expected to be in the House for the final vote to pass the Judiciary Bill, which would curtail the powers of the court.

The agitation against the bill continues strong. Thousands gathered at the protest rally in Jerusalem. More than 100 former security chiefs, including retired army commanders, also took to the streets. Another 10,000 volunteer soldiers have been announced as absentees. Meanwhile, Netanyahu was admitted to the hospital due to dehydration during the holiday celebration. Then he was diagnosed with a heart problem.

The move by Netanyahu’s far-right coalition government is to bring government control over matters including the appointment of Supreme Court judges and overturn court rulings by a majority vote in parliament.

It is alleged that the new law is being introduced to bypass many corruption cases against Netanyahu. The introduction of the bill in Parliament was frozen in March due to strong protests, but was revived after the compromise failed.
