Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu Defies International Pressure to Proceed with Offensive in Rafah

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists that the planned offensive against Rafah will go ahead despite international pressure.

– No amount of international pressure should stop us from carrying out all the war’s goals. To do that, we will also operate in Rafah, Netanyahu said at the state of a cabinet meeting on Sunday.

Netanyahu criticized the international community for having a short memory when it comes to the October 7 Hamas attack.

– To our friends I say: Is your memory that short? How quickly you forgot October 7, the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust, Netanyahu said as the meeting began.

– So quickly you are ready to deny Israel the right to defend itself against the monsters in Hamas, he continued.

He emphasized that the offensive against Rafah will take its course, and that the civilian population must be evacuated from the combat areas.

The international community, including Israel’s ally the United States, has strongly warned against an offensive in Rafah, where 1.4 million Palestinians reside, most fleeing the war further north in Gaza. Several countries fear that an offensive will lead to a bloodbath.

German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz, who is in Jordan this weekend, said on Sunday that an attack on Rafah would make it very difficult to achieve peace in the region. He made it clear that this will be the message when he later meets Netanyahu in Jerusalem.
