Tel Aviv –
Prime Minister (PM) Israel Benjamin Netanyahu sparked that Gaza Strip had to be demilitarized after the war against Hamas ends later. Netanyahu also stressed that only the Israeli military could be trusted to do this, and not any international forces or bodies.
“Past experience shows that international forces are ineffective in demilitarizing areas controlled by forces hostile to Israel,” Netanyahu said in his statement as quoted The Times of Israel and reported Al ArabiyaWednesday (6/12/2023).
Netanyahu emphasized that he would not accept any arrangement involving international troops or bodies over the Gaza Strip.
“Gaza must be demilitarized. And in order for Gaza to experience demilitarization, there is only one force that can ensure this demilitarization — and this force is the Israeli Armed Forces,” he said.
“No international force can be responsible for this,” Netanyahu said, referring to international discussions about establishing an army to control the Gaza Strip after the war between Israel and Hamas ends.
“We have seen what happened in other places where international troops were brought in for demilitarization purposes,” he added.
In a statement released last month, Secretary-General United Nations (UN Secretary General) Antonio Guterres warned that the Palestinian Authority must take responsibility for the Gaza Strip, assisted by relevant countries working together.
“After the war — and this is my opinion — I believe it is important to strengthen the Palestinian Authority to assume responsibility in Gaza,” said Guterres.
