(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Seo Hye-rim = As the Israeli military announced a ground war against Rafah, the southernmost border city in the Palestinian Gaza Strip, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that a safe passage would be prepared for the evacuation of civilians in the area.
Prime Minister Netanyahu said in an interview with the US ABC broadcast on the 11th (local time), “We will eliminate the remaining Hamas terrorist units in Rafah, the last bastion,” and added, “We will do so while providing safe passage for civilians to leave.” He said.
Regarding the United States’ statement that it does not support military operations that do not consider the issue of protecting civilians, he said, “I agree with the United States’ opinion.”

Previously, John Kirby, strategic communications coordinator for the White House National Security Council (NSC), said on the 8th, “If we conduct military operations right now without fully considering the issue of protecting civilians, it will be a disaster for civilians and we will not support such a thing.” It has been revealed.
When asked where the evacuated civilians are going, Prime Minister Netanyahu said, “There are many places north of Rafah that have been cleared of (Hamas),” and “we are making detailed plans.”
“We are not insensitive about this,” he said. “This is part of our war effort to keep civilians out of danger, and it is part of Hamas’s work to keep civilians in danger.”
Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed strong disapproval of opinions opposing the Israeli military’s ground battle against Rafah.
“Those who say we should not enter Rafah under any circumstances are basically telling us to lose the war and leave Hamas there,” he said, adding, “Victory is just around the corner.”
However, Prime Minister Netanyahu did not mention details such as the schedule for the ground battle against Rafah.
Rafah, bordering Egypt, is a major gateway through which the international community provides relief supplies to the Gaza Strip, and is where Palestinian civilians who have come to the south to escape the war between Israel and Hamas are concentrated.
It is estimated that about 1.4 million people, more than half of the total population of the Gaza Strip of 2.4 million, have taken refuge in Rafah.
