Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Opposition Leader Gantz Form Emergency Government to Combat Hamas

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly agreed with opposition politician Benny Gantz to form an emergency government. Several ministers from the ruling Likud party confirmed this to Israeli media on Wednesday. The parties have agreed to form a war cabinet that includes Netanyahu, Gantz and Defense Minister Joaw Galant, according to a statement from Gantz’s National Unity Party.

This war cabinet should exist during the fighting with Hamas in the Gaza Strip. According to a media report, Israel’s new emergency government will be sworn in on Thursday. This will happen at 6 p.m. (local time; 5 p.m. CEST), reports the TV station Channel 13.

Former Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot and Likud Minister Ron Dermer will serve as assessors without voting rights. According to reports, Gantz wants to appoint five ministers for the security cabinet. Opposition leader Yair Lapid and his Yesh Atid party are therefore not involved.

On Saturday, Netanyahu offered the two opposition politicians Lapid and Gantz to join a unity government. Negotiations had been going on in the background for days. Experts assume that a broad coalition is necessary in order to be able to implement far-reaching military and political decisions in the next few days.

Terrorists carried out a massacre of Israeli civilians in border towns and at a music festival on Saturday on behalf of Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip. It was the worst bloodbath in Israeli history. According to the army, the number of deaths in Israel is more than 1,200. At least 3,000 other people were injured.

The Israeli army then said it attacked hundreds of terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip. The number of Palestinians killed rose to at least 1,055 on Wednesday. The Ministry of Health in Gaza said around 5,000 more people were injured.
