Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Undergoes Pacemaker Surgery, Plans to Vote on Judicial Amendment

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that he is in “excellent health” after being fitted with a pacemaker in hospital, and that he plans to come to the Knesset on Monday to vote on a major judicial amendment.

“We are continuing efforts to complete the legislation, as well as efforts to do so through consensus, but in any case I want you to know that I will be joining my colleagues in the Knesset tomorrow morning,” he added in a video statement.

And Netanyahu underwent surgery to implant a pacemaker on Sunday, hours before the start of parliament debate on a key clause in the controversial judicial reform bill that has sparked unprecedented protests.

Sheba Hospital announced on Sunday morning that Netanyahu’s health was “good” after surgery to implant a pacemaker.

Netanyahu, 73, was hospitalized overnight to undergo a pacemaker implantation at Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer. The hospital said in a statement that the prime minister “will remain under medical supervision in the cardiology department.”

Netanyahu’s office said in a statement that Deputy Prime Minister Yariv Levin had replaced him.

And last Sunday, Netanyahu left the hospital after a night spent in it because he felt dizzy as a result of his dehydration, according to his office.

The proposed judicial reform of Netanyahu’s right-wing government, announced in January, has sharply divided Israel and sparked one of the largest protest movements in the country’s history.

The proposed plan limits the powers of the Supreme Court as part of a package of reforms, which the opposition sees as a threat to democracy.
