Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has set three conditions for achieving peace in Gaza: the destruction of Hamas, the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip and the “deradicalization” of Palestinian society.
The destruction of Hamas seems clear. Netanyahu previously said his forces “will continue until every Hamas fighter is destroyed.” It is not clear how many supporters the group has.
Hamas is said to be holding 129 more people. Recently, five hostages’ bodies were found in underground tunnels. It concerns two civilians and three soldiers.
Netanyahu listed the conditions in an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal. But after a visit to the Gaza Strip on Monday, he said he would continue to intensify the fight against Hamas for the time being.
“We will not stop, we will continue to fight and we will intensify the fighting in the coming days. It will be a long war that is not about to end,” the prime minister said. If Netanyahu has his way, there will be no peace in the area for the time being.
There appears to be no new phase in the war
He previously announced that the war would “enter another phase”. Instead of large-scale attacks, smaller precision attacks would be deployed. But that transition does not seem to be taking place yet.
Israel’s attacks do not only kill Hamas supporters. Many civilians are victims of the war. According to Hamas, more than 20,000 people have been killed by Israeli bombing and shelling. More than 54,000 people were injured.
Israel is receiving less and less international support. The country has been attacking Gaza since Hamas’ major attack on October 7 that killed 1,200 people.
