Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The corruption trial against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu resumed on Monday (4/12/2023) after a two-month break after a state of emergency was declared due to the Hamas attack on October 7.

Reported CNN InternationalIsrael’s Justice Minister Yaris Levin lifted the state of emergency effective December 1.

Netanyahu’s corruption trial first began in January 2020, presenting Netanyahu in court as a defendant. He is on trial on charges of fraud, breach of trust and bribery all of which Netanyahu denies.

In Case 1000, he was charged with fraud and breach of trust in connection with allegations that he accepted gifts such as cigars and champagne from overseas businessmen.

In the 2000 Case, he was also charged with fraud and breach of trust and accused of seeking favorable coverage in one of Israel’s leading newspapers in exchange for limiting the circulation of one of the newspaper’s main rival newspapers.

In the most serious case, Case 4000, he was charged with bribery, fraud and breach of trust for allegedly providing regulatory benefits worth more than US$250 million at the time to his friend Shaul Elovitch, who was the controlling shareholder in telecommunications company Bezeq.

In return, prosecutors said, Elovitch ensured positive coverage of the Prime Minister on his online news site called Walla! News. Elovitch denied the allegations.

Israeli Regional Cooperation Minister David Amsalem criticized the resumption of wartime trials.

“War? a minister in the Ministry of Justice.

Netanyahu called the indictment a “stitching” and an attempt by Israel’s liberal elite and media to oust him and his right-wing bloc. Under Israeli law, he is not required to step down from his post unless he is found guilty and the sentence remains upheld during the appeal process.

Earlier this year, his government passed a law that effectively stripped the country’s courts of their power to declare a prime minister unfit to serve. Critics argue that the law was passed in Netanyahu’s interests amid an ongoing corruption trial and have filed objections to the law before the country’s Supreme Court.
