According to a Zionist police statement, the woman, whose name and origin have not been identified, attempted to stab a police officer on one of the roads leading to Al-Aqsa Mosque.

A journalist AFP heard gunshots and saw the body of a woman lying on the ground, then wrapped in a protective blanket.

“Israeli police opened fire on the assailant and the medics who arrived at the scene determined his death,” the Israeli police said in a statement, adding that the attempted attack resulted in no casualties.

The 30-year-old woman, according to police, was leaving the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, Islam’s third holiest site, when she approached officers.

For your information, Israeli security forces are stationed at every entrance to the holy site, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque compound is located in east Jerusalem, the Palestinian sector of the city that Israel occupied in 1967 and later annexed in a move never recognized by the international community.

In May, days of clashes at the site broke out between Palestinians and Israeli forces. The incident marked the beginning of an 11-day war between Israel and the Hamas group in the Gaza Strip, Palestine.

Earlier, five Palestinians were killed on Sunday after an Israeli attack on the West Bank, the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territory, sparked a firefight with Hamas insurgents.
