Tel Aviv –
Prime Minister (PM) of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu he explained his party’s intention to carry out a military attack in Rafah. He confirmed that he wanted to return the guards held in Gaza and get rid of them Hamas.
“I ordered an operation in Rafah. Within a few hours, our soldiers raised the Israeli flag at the Rafah crossing and lowered the Hamas flag,” Netanyahu said as reported by CNN, Wednesday (8/ 5/2024).
He emphasized that the military offensive in Rafah had two main objectives. One of them, he said, was to overthrow Hamas.
“The entrance to Rafah has two main war aims; return our enemies and destroy Hamas,” he said.
Netanyahu emphasized that it was necessary to put military pressure on Hamas to free the hostages. He also said that the Hamas ceasefire was only to prevent the Rafah attack.
“Yesterday’s proposal by Hamas was that our soldiers would bring a torpedo into Rafah. That did not happen,” he said.
Hamas accepted the ceasefire proposal late on Monday, but Israel said the agreement was still “far from meeting its demands.” Netanyahu confirmed that he had sent a team of Israeli negotiators to Cairo, the Egyptian capital, to continue to “stand firm” on Israel’s terms.
“Israel cannot accept proposals that endanger the security of our citizens and the future of our country,” he said.
It was previously reported that Israel had deployed its troops, including tanks, for a ground attack on Rafah. Israel claims the attack was carried out to destroy Hamas.
The war in Gaza has been going on since October 2023. Israel’s attack on Gaza was carried out after Hamas carried out an attack that killed 1,200 people in Israel.
Israeli attacks left more than 34 thousand people dead and tens of thousands wounded. The majority of victims are children and women.
