At the weekend, at the opening concert of the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra’s 143rd concert season, a new star – Israeli pianist Joavs Levanon – took the stage of the Liepaja concert hall “Lielais dzintars”.
“At the age of 19, the Israeli pianist Yoav Levanon already demonstrates enormous strength and maturity,” so the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” commented on the impressive performance of the young pianist last year at the European Open Air Exhibition in Frankfurt, where he played Frédéric Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra in the presence of 25 thousand spectators.
His performance at the “Fondation Louis Vuitton” concert in Paris last season was highly praised by the “Diapason” critic: “Joav Levanon is not only a stunning virtuoso. His convincing interpretations already make him an authentic musician who has what it takes to become one of the greatest pianists of this century.”
At the opening of the 143rd concert season, together with the Israeli pianist Yoav Levanon, the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra and its chief conductor Guntis Kuzma led the audience on an emotional journey from darkness to light, from despair to hope: the triumph over the psychological crisis experienced by oneself and the return to creative activity is the theme of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto . The music is expressive and passionate, also refined and poetic, and the Second Piano Concerto is one of the composer’s most popular works, with memorable melodies and grand orchestration.
The concert program also included Polish composer Witold Lutoslavski’s Concerto for Orchestra. Lutoslawski is one of the most prominent European composers of the 20th century, as well as one of the most influential Polish musicians. He has received numerous awards, including the highest award in Poland – the Order of the White Eagle. Next to the two foreign greats, there was also a miniature “Musica alba” by the prominent Liepāja composer Agra Engelmanis.
At the end of next week, the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra will start its Latvian concert tour. With five concerts from September 21 to October 1, the orchestra and its artistic director Guntis Kuzma will go to Jelgava, Auci, Limbaži, Madona and Daugavpils to present a program of Viennese classics for the public to enjoy together with clarinetist Anna Gāgani.
But the next orchestra concert in “Great Amber” is expected on October 21 – it will be an opportunity to experience the orchestra’s music in interaction with the ballet. The program includes the joint work of musician and composer Reiņš Sējān and Latvian National Ballet’s leading soloist and choreographer Elsa Leimane “Vārna. Flight in One Act’.
