(CNN) — Mark Regev, a senior adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, told CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour on Tuesday that Israel’s post-war plan for Gaza is not a “persistent occupation.”
He added: “I think you can expect something more flexible where we can move in and out as needed to deal with the security situation,” and continued: “We are not talking about any kind of continued occupation of the Gaza Strip.”
In response to a question about Netanyahu’s statements to ABC News on Monday that Israel would assume “overall security responsibility” in Gaza for an “indefinite period” after the end of the war, Regev said: “We have to differentiate between security presence and political control.”
Regev stated: “When this matter is over and we defeat Hamas, it is important that there is not a renewed terrorist element. A renewed Hamas. There is no point in doing this and going back to square one.”
He added: “There must be an Israeli security presence, but this does not mean that Israel is reoccupying Gaza, and it does not mean that Israel exists to rule the residents of Gaza.”
He continued: “On the contrary, we are interested in creating new frameworks, where the people of Gaza can govern themselves, and where there can be international support for the reconstruction of Gaza, and we hope that we can bring countries – Arab countries as well – to rebuild a demilitarized Gaza in After Hamas.
