Israeli Military Uncovers Network of Tunnels Beneath Gaza City, Including Below UN Headquarters
In a shocking revelation, the Israeli military has uncovered a vast network of tunnels beneath Gaza City, with some even extending below the United Nations’ headquarters in the region. The IDF recently escorted foreign reporters through these tunnels, providing a glimpse into the underground world that Hamas terrorists have been using to carry out their operations.
The tour began with the reporters entering the tunnels through a shaft located next to a school. As they ventured deeper, an Israeli officer explained, “Everything is conducted from here. All the energy for the tunnels, which you walked through them, are powered from here. This is one of the central commands of the intelligence. This place is one of the Hamas intelligence units, where they commanded most of the combat.”
The discovery of these tunnels has raised serious concerns about the compromised nature of the United Nations’ mission in Gaza. Israel argues that Hamas terrorists have been using the UN headquarters as a cover for their activities. However, UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) denies any knowledge of these tunnels and claims to have vacated the headquarters as early as October 12th.
Responding to Israel’s allegations, UNRWA stated, “UNRWA does not have the military and security expertise nor the capacity to undertake military inspections of what is or might be under its premises.” The organization further emphasized that whenever suspicious cavities were found near or under their premises in the past, protest letters were promptly filed to both the de facto authorities in Gaza and the Israeli authorities.
While Israel presents evidence of the tunnels’ existence beneath the UN headquarters, senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri dismisses these claims as “lies.” The controversy surrounding these tunnels comes at a time when Israel has accused hundreds of UNRWA employees of supporting or being complicit in Hamas’ massacre in Israel on October 7th.
The allegations against UNRWA have led several Western nations to pause their funding for the organization, which oversees aid for the people of Gaza. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has gone a step further, calling UNRWA “Hamas with a facelift” and urging the world to dismantle the organization. Gallant believes that an alternative mechanism should be established to provide aid to civilians in the war-stricken Gaza Strip.
“It’s time for the world to wake up and address this issue in a different way, while also addressing Gaza’s needs,” Gallant stated. He criticized UNRWA for employing individuals with ties to terrorism and accused them of receiving salaries from various countries that indirectly support terrorism.
The discovery of the tunnels beneath Gaza City has shed light on the complex web of underground operations carried out by Hamas. It has also exposed the vulnerabilities within the United Nations’ mission in the region. As tensions continue to escalate between Israel and Hamas, it remains to be seen how this revelation will impact the ongoing conflict and efforts to provide aid to the people of Gaza.
