The Israeli military continues to bombard the Gaza Strip in response to coordinated attacks by the Islamist group Hamas. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced in Telegram that a large-scale attack is underway against targets associated with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, DPA said.
A ground offensive in Gaza will be launched when it is appropriate and meets our objectives, IDF spokesman Yonatan Conricus said in his daily briefing on the X Network. He expressed hope that today would be calmer and added: “We have a long and very, very dangerous road ahead of us.”
The Israeli military’s goal is to reach Hamas in its network of tunnels and bunkers under the densely populated Gaza Strip, Conricus said.
Early this morning, the death toll in Gaza rose to 1,200 after 51 people were killed in a pre-dawn Israeli attack, the Palestinian Health Ministry said, according to the Associated Press.
Yesterday, Hamas launched a new rocket attack against Israel, focusing on the southern city of Ashkelon, AP adds.
More than 338,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in the Gaza Strip, which is under siege and shelled by the Israeli army, according to figures from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), cited by AFP.
The number of displaced people in the densely populated territory rose by another 75,000 to 338,934 by last night, the UN office said in a statement today.
