Israeli Military Attack in Gaza Kills 9, Raises Concerns over Netanyahu’s Leadership

There were reports that Palestinian civilians waiting to receive relief supplies in the Gaza Strip were killed in an attack by the Israeli military on the 12th. On the 29th of last month, the Israeli military opened fire on refugees who were trying to receive relief supplies due to site control, leading to a stampede that resulted in the deaths of at least 112 people, leading to a series of similar accidents. The international community’s concerns about the delivery and control process of aid supplies are also growing.

Citing the Palestinian media outlet ‘Wafa’, Al Jazeera and others reported that nine residents waiting to receive relief supplies near an intersection in Gaza City, northern Gaza Strip, were killed by Israeli military fighter jets and artillery bombing. He added that about 20 injured people were transferred to nearby Al Shifa Hospital.

However, in relation to this attack, it has not yet been confirmed whether the Israeli military intentionally targeted civilians, as in the case of the large casualty that occurred on the 29th of last month, or whether they were victims of widespread bombing.

Expectations that Israel and Hamas would enter into a temporary ceasefire in celebration of the Islamic holy month of fasting, Ramadan, were also dashed early on. Rather, concerns about an escalation of war are increasing. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged restraint on both sides, saying, “Despite the start of Ramadan, which celebrates peace, reconciliation and solidarity, killings and bloodshed continue in the Gaza Strip.”

However, Reuters reported that the Israeli military conducted an airstrike on the Baalbek area in northeastern Lebanon on the 11th, killing at least one person and injuring six others. It has revealed its intention to engage in all-out war not only with Hamas but also with Hezbollah, a pro-Iranian Shia armed group in Lebanon. Baalbek is more than 100km from the Israel-Lebanon border and is north of the capital Beirut. Previously, on the 10th, Muslims gathered at Al-Aqsa Mosque, a site of religious conflict in East Jerusalem, were suppressed with batons.

The international community’s concerns about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who continues to engage in a ‘river-to-river’ confrontation with the Arab world, are also increasing. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported, “Major intelligence agencies, including the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), are predicting that domestic and international distrust in Prime Minister Netanyahu is growing and that there will be large-scale protests demanding his resignation.”
