Israeli Mental Health Crisis: Thousands Seek Help Amid Gaza Conflict

The Israeli Broadcasting Authority said that the Mental First Aid Society has received more than 100,000 requests for psychological assistance since the beginning of the war on the Gaza Strip on October 7.

The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation reported that “tens of thousands of Israelis have been subjected to a personal tragedy, and all of Israel is suffering from a national shock.”

A few days ago, the Israeli occupation army revealed that about 9,000 of its soldiers had received “psychological assistance” since the beginning of the war, and about a quarter of them had not returned to combat.

The Israeli army says that it is still too early to estimate the number of soldiers who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of their military service and the war on the Gaza Strip.

To date, at least 838 mental health officers, most of them in the reserves, have been recruited to treat male and female soldiers who suffer from psychological disorders as a result of the war.

Collapse of the mental health system

Haaretz newspaper reported – at the beginning of this month – about the collapse of the mental health system in Israel after the seventh of last October.

The newspaper said that dozens of psychiatrists working in the public health system recently left for Britain, according to sources in the field.

She added that the wave of departures comes at a time when the demand for mental health assistance is increasing in the country in light of the war, and now the mental health system is facing a real problem.

It quoted a senior manager in the mental health system, who spoke with one of the departing doctors, as saying: “In Britain, they will not necessarily enjoy a higher salary, but what drives them to leave is the frustration caused by the heavy workload, and the feeling that they find it difficult to see how the situation will improve in the future.” “.

Before that, directors of mental health centers stated that the events of last October 7 caused the presence of about 300,000 additional psychiatric patients.

The death toll of the occupation army has risen to 523 officers and soldiers in the Gaza Strip since the seventh of last October, while the Palestinian resistance says that the number of deaths of the Israeli army is much greater than the announced number.

The occupation army revealed that 1,106 soldiers had been injured since the start of the ground operation, 240 of whom were seriously injured.

Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli army has been waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip, which as of Sunday morning has left 23,968 martyrs and 60,582 injured, most of them children and women. It has also left massive infrastructure destruction and an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, according to the Strip authorities. And the United Nations.
