On Thursday, the Israeli Knesset approved the formation of an emergency government for the duration of the war, in the midst of the war raging with Hamas for the fifth day in a row.
After a meeting in Tel Peep in which Netanyahu participated, the Likud Party issued a statement confirming the coalition members’ agreement to form the new government in light of the war.
The statement said: “All coalition leaders, without exception, support the formation of an emergency and national unity government, and I assigned Prime Minister Netanyahu to work on forming it.”
Since the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas, last Saturday, after the latter launched a sudden and unprecedented attack on the Hebrew state, voices have risen within it to form an emergency government.
But differences soon emerged, due to the opposition’s objection to the personality of the extremist Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, whom it accuses of inflaming the situation.
Leader of the Israeli opposition
For his part, Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid, on Thursday, accused the government of an “unforgivable failure” for not preventing the attack launched by Hamas on Saturday against Israel.
“Saturday’s failure is inexcusable,” Lapid said in a televised speech, stressing that he will not join the emergency government announced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and opposition member Benny Gantz on Wednesday.
