Israeli government responds to Petro’s statements that equate Israel with Nazis

In the middle of a press conference for Latin American media, Lior Haiat, spokesperson for the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spoke about the recent statements by the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, about the conflict in Israel due to the attacks by the terrorist group Hamas. According to the diplomat, Petro’s words were “regrettable.”

The message that President Petro published on his social networks makes a comparison between the Gaza Strip and the extermination camps in Auschwitz, which generated a heated debate on various opinion platforms, which, in turn, transcended internationally.

Now, different leaders and leaders of the international community have rejected the statements of the Colombian head of state and have described them as a “huge lack of respect.”

Petro, in turn, has been very active on social networks and has published more than a hundred messages about the conflict in the Middle East in less than five days. However, none of them have found a clear condemnation of the attacks carried out by Hamas against the Israeli civilian population, which has raised alarm bells among several members of the international community and diplomatic officials.

In his virtual press conference on October 12, 2023, Lior Haiat disapproved of Petro’s statements and stressed that “they are very regrettable messages.” In diplomatic terms, an assertion of this type leaves the Colombian President in a bad light.

The North American ambassador and historian Deborah Lipstadt condemned Petro’s words as follows: “We are shocked to see Colombian President Gustavo Petro compare the Israeli Government to Hitler’s genocidal regime. We strongly condemn President Petro’s statements and call on him to condemn Hamas, a designated terrorist organization, for its barbaric murders of Israeli men, women and children.” With Infobae
