Israeli Golani Battalion Withdraws from Gaza After Heavy Losses – Hidayatullah News

Eramuslim.com – Israel’s elite 13th Battalion Golani Brigade withdrew from the Gaza Strip after suffering heavy losses in its ranks, culminating in the ambush of Palestinian fighters in the al-Shujaiya neighborhood.

Seven Golani soldiers, including two high-ranking officers, were killed on December 12, when Palestinian liberation fighters ambushed Israeli forces in al-Shujaiya.

The dead included Lieutenant Colonel Tomer Grinberg, commander of the 13th Battalion, and Colonel Izhak Ben Basat, head of the Golani Brigade’s forward command team. Grinberg was previously captured on video rallying his troops in the northern Gaza Strip, promising them victory. The 13th Battalion also lost Major Roei Meldasi, a company commander in the same ambush.

Nine days after the historic ambush that killed soldiers and officers from the 51st and 13th Golani Battalions, the Israeli occupation decided to withdraw the devastated 13th Battalion from the Gaza Strip, to “regroup and rest.”

In its aggression, the Israeli occupation relied heavily on the Golani Brigade Battalion to achieve what it considered “victory”. The same is expected from the Golani fighters in Gaza, especially in al-Shujaiya, which is a major obstacle for the Brigade which has suffered heavy losses during the 2014 war in Gaza.

However, the Brigade failed to meet the expectations of its commander, instead, its soldiers were scattered in Gaza, because the Palestinian Resistance broke their chain of command, eliminating key figures.

Israel’s Channel 12 reported that for the first time since the invaders launched their invasion of the Gaza Strip, troops of the 13th Battalion will take a break to refresh themselves in the Gaza Envelope. Israeli media said that the occupying soldiers would only be given 48 hours of rest before being redeployed to Gaza.

It is worth noting that Israeli paratroopers will also be withdrawn from the Gaza Strip, for the same period of time.

Interestingly, the Israeli occupation forces have allowed the paratroopers to take a short rest, after the families of the occupying soldiers criticized the Israeli military command for extending their term of service. Channel 12 also highlighted letters sent by occupying forces to their families from inside the Gaza Strip, in which they discussed the difficult conditions they faced, including “deprivation of sleep.”
