Gaza Strip. The Ministry of Health in Gaza, a Palestinian territory ruled by Hamas, reported this Monday that Israeli forces are bombing the last hospital that was partially operational in the north of the strip, an area where Israel launched intense operations in the last month.
“At this time, the occupation forces continue to bombard and violently destroy the Kamal Adwan hospital,” the ministry said, referring to the care center in the town of Beit Lahia, in northern Gaza.
The hospital’s director, Hosam Abu Safieh, declared in a statement that the situation is “catastrophic” and that the army did not communicate with the health center “before attacking it directly.”
“There are several members of our staff who were injured and we cannot leave the hospital,” said the doctor who expressed that he does not understand “the purpose of this bombing that targets the hospital.”
The Israeli military indicated that it is “verifying” the reports.
Israel launched an intense military campaign on October 6 in the northern Gaza Strip, where it says the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas has regrouped its contingents.
The spokesman for the Gaza civil defense agency, Mahmud Basal, stated this Monday that 1,300 people have died in the military operation and that the north of the territory suffers “a serious blockade of medicine, water and food.”
“Medical teams, civil defense teams and hospitals in the northern region are out of service for the 13th consecutive day,” he said in a statement.
AFP could not independently verify these figures and the Israeli army has not issued any assessment, limiting itself to reporting that “dozens of terrorists” died during the operation.
The war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza broke out after Islamist militants launched the unprecedented attack on October 7, 2023 in southern Israeli territory.
In this assault, 1,206 people died, mostly civilians, according to an AFP count based on official Israeli data, including hostages who died in captivity.
In retaliation, the Israeli army launched an offensive in Gaza that has so far left 43,374 dead, most of them civilians, according to data from the Hamas Ministry of Health, considered reliable by the UN.
