Flag stolen after memorial event
According to a statement from the city, the flag was raised in memory of the Nazi pogroms against Jews on November 9, 1938. It was “obviously torn down quickly with brute force,” said a statement from Mayor Hanno Benz (SPD) and Head of Public Order Paul Georg Wandrey.
After a memorial event in the Darmstadt synagogue, Benz noticed the missing flag and alerted the police. “Acts that are directed against Jewish citizens in Germany, against Jews all over the world and especially in Israel, are borne of hatred and contempt for humanity – we will pursue them consistently,” it continued.
