Israeli Drone Strike Kills Hamas Leader in Beirut, Sparks Strong Reactions from Iran, Lebanon, and Palestine

Iranian official media reported that the killing of Hamas leader Saleh al-Arouri on Tuesday in an Israeli drone strike would increase the resistance’s motivation to fight Israel.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said, “The blood of the martyr will undoubtedly ignite the flame of resistance and its motivation to fight the Zionist occupiers, not only in Palestine, but also in the region and among all those seeking freedom in the world.”

Kanaani also denounced the violation of the “aggressive Zionist regime” of Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Hamas confirmed the “assassination” of Al-Arouri in an Israeli strike in the southern suburb of Beirut on Tuesday, along with two commanders of the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military arm of Hamas.

Lebanese security sources said that Al-Arouri was killed along with five other people in a strike carried out by an Israeli march on a Hamas office in Al-Musharrafieh in the southern suburb of Beirut.

Izzat al-Rishq, a member of the Hamas political bureau, described the operation as “a cowardly assassination carried out by the Zionist occupation against the leaders and symbols of our Palestinian people.”

He said that these assassinations “will not succeed in breaking the will and steadfastness of our people, or undermining the continuation of their valiant resistance,” noting that they “prove once again the abject failure of this enemy in achieving any of its aggressive goals in the Gaza Strip.”

In its statement, Hamas described Al-Arouri as “the chief of staff of the resistance in the West Bank and Gaza and the architect of the Al-Aqsa flood,” in reference to the unprecedented Hajmas attack on Israel on October 7.

In Israel, while ministers and members of the Knesset praised the assassination of Al-Arouri, according to Haaretz newspaper, Yossi Fuchs, Secretary of the Council of Ministers, warned against commenting on the subject of the assassination.

Knesset member and former diplomat Danny Danon, on his account on the X platform, praised the Israeli army and security forces for the assassination of Saleh Al-Arouri.
